Context

“The cold and violent waters of the Great Australian Bight are home to one of the country’s most biodiverse and important marine ecosystems.” (theguardian.com) But Equinor, a Norwegian company has plans to drillfor oil in the Great Australian Bight by October 2019. The chance of an oil spill is extremely high. The disaster would affect the whole coast from South Australia to New South Wales, taking decades to recover.

Bottles

We created a bottle collection preserving the last oil-free ocean water from South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania. If drilling proceeds, these water samples may be the only proof of our Great Australian Bight rare and complex ecosystem

The Flag

We all want a land to call ours. A place where the oceans run freely and clean. Our flag represents this place, any place. Fight for your local coast and claim it yours, declare independency.

Solution

We aim to secure a Unesco World Heritage listing before drilling commences in October 2019. The Great Australian Bight is eligible to become part of the list:

(vii) for containing superlative natural phenomena or areas of exceptional natural beauty and aesthetic importance; (UNESCO World Heritage List Criteria)

Our next step is to contact the state government about preparing a Commonwealth proposal for the World Heritage list. You can sign the petition here.
